MILWAUKEE - Marquette put up two goals before Wis.-Milwaukee created a late charge. However, Marquette held on for a 2-1 win in a match-up featuring two cross-town soccer rivals.
The Golden Eagles (9-7-1) made the most of the first half, scoring on its only shot on goal of the half. Junior midfielder Danny Mullin struck a free kick from 40 yards away that junior forward Chris Lee blasted into the net on a header. The goal was Lee's 14th of the season putting him in a tie for fourth in Marquette single season history. He is three goals short of Ed Nomo-Ongolo's total of 17 in the 1964 season. Marquette had other opportunities in the first half, but couldn't take advantage of the situations.
"It was one of those funny things. We had two or three really good chances in the first half," head coach Steve Adlard said. "If we get one or two of those, we break the game right open."
Marquette did, however, put up a second goal in the 58th minute. Sophomore forward Blair Kohlmeyer ran upon a forward pass from senior midfielder Derek Gutierrez. Kohlmeyer struck with his right foot from 20 yards. UWM defender Steve Bode got a heel on the ball which deflected it to the left. UWM keeper Kirk Thode, who was playing the ball in the middle of the goal, couldn't react fast enough before the ball bounced into the right netting.
"We had two or three opportunities right before that, so we felt that it was there waiting for us," head coach Steve Adlard said.
The Panthers (12-5-1) made a contest of it in the 71st minute. Chris Brisson and Steve Sperl played a give-and-go on the right side which Brisson netted from 12 yards out.
Marquette nearly put up a third goal late. Thode came off his line to play a ball 30 yards from net that ended up going wide. Lee tracked it down and sent a rainbow towards the UWM goal. Milwaukee defender Kahled El-Ahmad chested the ball before it went in the net. That was the only save of the night as both Thode and Marquette keeper Adam Ubert did not make a stop.
The Golden Eagles travel to Charlotte on Saturday, Nov. 1 for a Conference USA contest at 7 p.m. (EST).
