MILWAUKEE ? Junior forward Chris Lee head a threesome of Marquette players selected to Conference USA's all-league teams. Lee was a first team All C-USA selection. He is joined by senior midfielder Derek Gutierrez, who was named to the second team, and freshman forward Nathan Sabich, who was named to the all-freshman team.
Lee put up some amazing totals in 2003-04, scoring 14 goals. That total is the fourth best in Marquette single season history. He also had two assists for 30 points. His 67 shots were second best in the league and his points and goals led the conference. Twice in 2003, he had three goal matches, including one against East Carolina. He also led the league with seven goals in C-USA play.
Gutierrez turned into a playmaker in 2003 rather than his role of a goal scorer, earning eight assists, to bring his career totals to 21, the eighth best career total in Marquette history. He had six of his eight assists in Conference USA play, including three against East Carolina. He was a preseason All-Conference team member heading into 2003.
Since moving to sweeper, the Marquette back line became much more solid with the addition of Sabich. He moved from outside back to the central defense after Marquette surrendered 14 goals in its first four matches. Since then, MU allowed 14 goals. Marquette allowed just 10 goals in C-USA play including shutouts of Saint Louis, DePaul and East Carolina.
