MILWAUKEE - Steve Lawrence was named the MVP of the Marquette men's soccer team at the school's annual awards banquet on Sunday, April 28. Lawrence continues to add to his wealth of post-season accolades with this team award.
On paper, the four-year starter from Marquette High School and Brookfield, Wis., was the most statistically wealthy player on the team. Serving as central defender, Lawrence was a sure-footed, steady player that grew over his four years to be the team leader. His calmness in pressure situations and charisma around the ball proved to be his best assets.
In 2002, Lawrence helped Marquette to 1.2 goals per game allowed. Only four of the last 22 seasons have the Golden Eagles had a better goals against total.
With the team's steady defensive play, Lawrence helped guide the Golden Eagles to the regular season Conference USA Championship and the top seed in the league's post-season tournament.
Lawrence was a four-year letterwinner for Marquette and was drafted this spring by the Milwaukee Wave of the Major Indoor Soccer League. He was also named first-team all-conference, Conference USA Co-Defender of the Year, and was named all-region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
