COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Marquette men's soccer team was defeated by Air Force, 7-0, in the final match of the Parent's Weekend Invitational on the campus of Air Force. The Golden Eagles split the weekend and sit at 1-1 on the year. Air Force improves to 2-0 and wins the tournament.
Marquette had little chance early. The Falcons pounced on Marquette scoring in the second, fifth and 15th minutes. MU played from behind for most of the match on the field that was still soaked from weekend downpours. Adding to the difficulty of playing from behind, MU lost midfielder Chris Lee due to a red card in the second half, allowing the Falcons to have many opportunities.
"The field was under water, and they ran at us relentlessly," head coach Steve Adlard said. "They have a great offensive scheme and no one is going to stop them, especially here. They made us look bad today."
Air Force scored on seven of its 18 shots. The Golden Eagles had a pair of chances in their 11 shots. Two Marquette attempts hit the cross bar, but the Golden Eagles were shut out.
"The reality of it was we hit a very good team on a very good day," Adlard added. "We played 20 players and a lot of freshmen got time. In the end, it was mature players versus freshmen. We couldn't cope. But we had a lot of positives for the future to build on."
Marquette returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at Ill.-Chicago at 4 p.m.
