The Marquette men's soccer team got its Conference USA season off to a good start, shutting out DePaul 4-0 at Valley Fields in Milwaukee.
The Golden Eagles (2-3, 1-0 C-USA) struck early, when sophomore Blair Kohlmeyer received a pass from senior Matt Darby for a goal.
"We scored one pretty quickly," said head coach Steve Adlard. "After the first goal, they needed to defend. We had the ball on their end and that is how we got the second goal."
Senior Derek Gutierrez assisted junior Chris Lee on the second goal of the game in the eleventh minute.
"We played very well, there was a lot of pressure on us prior to the game because of our frailty to defend. If we conceded an early goal, our heads would be down the rest of the game. We scored first and took control," said Adlard.
Freshman Matt Blouin scored the third goal of the game in the 78th minute off an assist from freshman Ryan Nikchevich.
Kohlmeyer struck again in the 86th minute to complete the scoring for the Golden Eagles.
Senior goalkeeper Adam Ubert stopped four Blue Demon (1-3, 0-1 C-USA) shots in a full 90 minutes of action.
Marquette returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 13 when they take on Evansville. Action begins at Valley Fields at 7 p.m.
