MILWAUKEE - Marquette senior midfielder Tony Walby had a goal and an assist in leading the Golden Eagles (4-3, 2-0 C-USA) to a 2-1 victory over USF (3-2-1, 0-2 C-USA).
Walby teamed with junior midfielder Chris Lee for MU's first goal of the contest. Walby's cross found Lee six yards in front of the net. Lee's strike to the near post came in the 36th minute.
Walby scored the match winning goal in the 87th minute. Tied 1-1, Walby raced to the far post and headed a ball crossed by senior midfielder Matt Darby. Darby's feed was perfect and Walby had little trouble placing the match winning strike past USF goalkeeper Dane Brenner.
"It was a nice winner," head coach Steve Adlard said. "Darby got by wide and had room to place his cross for once. Once the ball crossed the goal, it was obvious it was going to be put in the net. Walby made a nice finish on it."
USF, who tied the match in the 77th minute on a goal from J.R. Casadonte, nearly scored the go ahead goal in the 83rd minute. Brian Gill took a cross from C.D. Harris and headed it just wide of the goal. Gill was one-on-one with Marquette goalkeeper Adam Ubert.
The Golden Eagles' defense was the star of the contest. Marquette held the Bulls to just four shots and kept USF from a shot until 25 minutes left in the contest.
"It's surprising that a team as talented as South Florida didn't get shots on goal. It's a nice surprise," Adlard said. "Most of our defensive shape and covering was very good. We were very aggressive, speedy and fought hard to keep their offensive opportunities in check."
Marquette's win was part of the Marquette Invitational, presented by Howard Johnson. In earlier action in the tournament, Washington defeated Michigan, 3-2, in the tournament's opening contest. Play continues in the Marquette Invitational on Sunday when USF plays Michigan at 11:30 a.m. and Marquette takes on Washington at 2 p.m. All matches are at Valley Fields.
