MILWAUKEE - In an action packed first 10 minutes, Washington (4-0-1) struck twice before the five minute mark and held off Marquette (4-4) for the final 80 minutes to win, 2-1. Washington wins the Marquette Invitational presented by Howard Johnson with a 2-0 record. Michigan, who defeated USF 2-0 earlier in the day, claims second with a 1-1 record and a plus-one goal differential. Marquette finished third with a 1-1 record and an even goal differential. USF finished fourth at 0-2.
"When you look at the big picture of this process, I think we proved we can play at this level," head coach Steve Adlard said. "When you look at our older players taking on many new responsibilities and the younger players coming in able to play at this level, I think we'll be very good in time."
Washington took the quick lead in the third minute. C.J. Klass, MVP of the tournament, blasted a 15 yard volley past MU keeper Adam Ubert to score the first of the three goals in the match in the 10 minutes.
The Huskies took a 2-0 advantage in the fifth minute. Klass played a long ball, catching Marquette in an offsides trap. Kevin Forrest found the ball in the corner of the box alone with Ubert and played it past the MU keeper for the quick two-goal advantage.
The Golden Eagles responded in the 10th minute when midfielder Chris Lee ended an MU break. Lee hit a low ball near post that Washington keeper Danny Waltman got a piece of, but the ball continued toward the net. The ball hit the right goalpost and went in. Senior midfielder Matt Darby and sophomore forward Blair Kohlmeyer earned assists on the play.
Washington was happy to play keep away from Marquette in the second half. The Huskies didn't take a shot and the allowed Marquette just two attempts in the final 45 minutes.
"We forced them back and they were comfortable with that," Adlard said. "We moved the ball well, forcing them to reshape, but they just let us play in front of them. I think Washington is a solid team, but we were fine and able to play fairly even with them."
Klass was named MVP of the tournament. He was joined on the all-tournament team by Danny Waltmann, Kevin Forrest, and Casey Armstrong of Washington; Knox Cameron, Kevin Taylor and Mychal Turpin of Michigan; Derek Gutierrez, Chris Lee and Matt Darby of Marquette; and Kareem Smith of USF.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, Sept. 28 against 14th ranked UAB in Birmingham, Ala.
