BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After fighting for a 2-2 halftime tie, Marquette (4-5, 2-1 C-USA) couldn't recover from a quick second-half UAB (6-0-2, 2-0 C-USA) goal off the kick, losing 3-2. The loss was Marquette's first in the Conference USA season.
"We're learning as we go," said MU head coach Steve Adlard. we're learning to compete and making progress, but it's a hard road. I've got a lot of frustrated players because they knew they were in this match."
Marquette took a quick lead, scoring in the fourth minute when Danny Mullin struck his first goal of the season off an assist from Derek Gutierrez.
The Blazers responded with two goals six minutes apart, scoring the later in the 31st minute. Marin Pusek scored the first of the two UAB goals. Rogerio Olivera added the second to give the Blazers, ranked seventh in the national rankings by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, a 2-1 lead.
But the Golden Eagles wouldn't surrender. MU got the equalizer 53 seconds before halftime. Bryan Dahlquist struck his first of the season to go into the half, tied at two.
"Our goals were two bombs from the top of the box. They were two beautiful goals," Adlard added. "We competed very well. We fought for everything and played good football throughout."
UAB scored off the kickoff, 18 seconds into the second half. Leandro De Oliviera ran with the Marquette defense down the sideline. After dribbling into the penalty area, the MU defense was unable to stop De Olivera, who scored his third of the year.
"There were 44 minutes left," Adlard said. "We were left with every chance to get another goal."
The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 1 against third-ranked ranked Saint Louis in St. Louis, Mo.
