Conference Season Winds Down For Marquette
Games at DePaul and South Florida Included In Schedule For The Week
Marquette will travel south for two games this week---one in Illinois and the other in Florida--as it takes on DePaul and USF. Following those two matches, Marquette will play three straight against non-conference opponents (Wis.-Milwaukee, Wright State and Wisconsin) before concluding the C-USA season at Cincinnati on Nov. 6.
Scouting DePaul
The Blue Demons enter Wednesday?s game with a 2-11-3, 0-5-1 record. DePaul most recently dropped a 1-0 decision to Wisconsin on Sunday and in its most recent C-USA game it lost to Memphis 2-1. John Partyka scored the lone goal for the Blue Demons. Partyka has three goals on the season for DePaul. The team?s leading scorer is Patrick Vyncke who has five goals for the Blue Demons. DePaul has not won in its last nine matches. Brian Allen and Michael Timlin have split goalkeeping duties for DePaul.
Scouting USF
The Bulls will play at UAB on Wednesday before taking on the Golden Eagles on Saturday. USF enters Wednesday?s game with a 7-1-2, 3-1-1 record and a ranking of 13 in the NSCAA National Poll. The Bulls dropped their first match of the season on Saturday to Cincinnati, 1-0. Hunter West has five goals on the season for the Bulls, but Simon Schoendorf lead the team with 12 points (three goals, six assists). Dane Brenner has spent the majority of the season in goal for the Bulls, allowing only seven goals all season while recording 33 saves. Brenner has five shutouts.
Conference USA Leaders
Senior forward Chris Lee and freshman goalkeeper Steven Grow are both among Conference USA?s leaders in certain statistical categories. Lee is tied for second in goals with eight (SLU?s Will John has nine) and is second in shots with 42 (Adam Ruud of Charlotte has 43). Lee is also fifth in C-USA in points with 17 (John leads with 21). Steven Grow is fifth in C-USA in goals against average with a GAA of 1.11 (Dane Brenner of USF has .73). Grow is also fifth in shutouts with two.
Looking Ahead
Marquette begins a stretch where they play four straight matches on the road. For two of those games, however, Marquette won?t need to travel very far. The Golden Eagles play at DePaul on Wednesday and at Wis.-Milwaukee on Oct. 26. Marquette?s final home match is against Wisconsin on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m.
Three Amigos
Chris Lee, Matt Blouin and Mike Manone have made up the bulk of Marquette?s offense this season. The three have combined to score 28 of Marquette?s 40 points this season. Blouin and Manone have scored each of the last seven points for Marquette over the last two games. Manone has assisted Blouin twice this season.
Climbing Up The Charts
Chris Lee currently has 33 career goals. The 33 goals places him up to fifth on Marquette?s all-time list. Lee needs one goal to tie Jim Tutaj who currently holds the fourth position with 34 career goals. Lee entered the season tied for tenth with Tutaj on the all-time shots list with 148. His 42 shots so far this season place him fifth overall, six shots behind Mark Dillon who has 196 shots.
Road Swing
Marquette will play four straight road games following Saturday?s match against Charlotte. Marquette played four straight on the road in 2003 and 2002, however, one match in each stretch was a neutral site game. The last time Marquette played four or more ?true? road games was in 1998 when they played five straight matches away from Valley Fields.
Almost Perfect Against Blue Demons
Marquette has never lost to the DePaul, winning 22 of 23 matches. The only blemish in Marquette?s record is a 0-0 tie in 1994. Marquette has won nine straight in the series including four straight at Wish Field. Marquette is outscoring DePaul 11-0 in the last three matches. The Golden Eagles have beaten the Blue Demons more than any other opponent in history.
Around Conference USA
Memphis held onto the top spot in the C-USA standings with a 2-1 victory at DePaul Friday night. Junior Dayton O?Brien scored the game-winning goal, his third of the season. O?Brien also scored the Tigers lone goal in a 1-1 non-conference tie with Illinois-Chicago on Sunday. Saint Louis shut out Louisville, 3-0, to move into second place in the conference as USF suffered its first loss of the season at Cincinnati. The Bearcats? Wiremu Patrick scored the lone goal in the 1-0 victory over the visiting Bulls.
Schedule Change
Marquette?s game at Wis.-Milwaukee has been changed to Tuesday, Oct. 26. The game, at Engelmann Field, will still begin at 3 p.m.
