CHICAGO --- The Marquette (3-9-1, 0-6-1) men's soccer team dropped a tough, 2-1 decision at DePaul (3-11-3, 1-5-1) in overtime this afternoon.
The teams played even soccer until Marquette broke through and scored first at 78:59. The play began with a Kellan Walsh thrown in. Walsh found Mike Carlson at the top of the penalty box who fired a shot.
Blue Demon goalkeeper Brian Allen blocked the shot and Matt Blouin was there to retrieve the rebound and quickly turned a shot from five yards past Allen for the first goal of the match. Blouin has now scored in three consecutive games.
"We lost our heads," said head coach Steve Adlard. "They weren't creating any offense. We started to play naively. We kept the ball live and made some poor decisions. At that stage in the game, it is naive."
A Marquette miscommunication in the backfield led to the first DePaul goal that came at 87:24. Kurt Albrecht found John Kornfeld just past midfield and Kornfeld carried it in for a goal.
The extra period began and DePaul controlled for most of the six minutes. A free kick by John Partyka set up the game winner as Anthony Minniti found Patrick Ferrell at 96:45 to secure the win.
Marquette will travel south to play No. 11 USF on Saturday at 7 p.m. EDT.
