TAMPA, Fla. - Matt Blouin's goal in the 77th minute of tonight's game was all Marquette (4-9-1, 1-6-1) needed to upset No. 11 USF (7-3-3, 3-3-1) on the road tonight.
"After Wednesday when we more or less gave one up late in the game, we tried to come back and we had figure out how to win," head coach Steve Adlard said. "We executed everything we talked about. We hit the crossbar three times and outshot them. We had to defend hard all game. I think it was a great team performance."
The Golden Eagles controlled the ball for most of the game, outshooting the Bulls 18-9 in the game. Blouin's goal came on assists by Pat Knoelke and Mike Carlson.
"It was a great goal, Carlson found Blouin who headed it in and the goalkeeper couldn't do anything about it," added Adlard.
Marquette survived a scare in the 88th minute when Andy Kroll saved a Penalty Kick by USF's Christian Jimenez. Kroll ended the game with four saves and recorded his first career shutout in the win.
"Kroll dove to his left and made a great one-handed save," said Adlard.
Marquette's last road win against a ranked opponent came on Sept. 22, 2000 when Marquette defeated No. 23 Santa Clara 1-0.
Marquette will travel to the East Side of Milwaukee to play at Wis.-Milwaukee on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
