PALOS HILLS, Ill. - The Marquette women's cross country team won its fifth straight Conference USA Championship today while the men's team placed sixth in the meet.
"We had a good race," said head coach Dave Uhrich. "We felt that if we had a good race we would be able to win it. It is great to leave Conference USA on a winning note like this."
Junior Jodi Jakubek took second overall at the meet, earning first-team All-C- USA honors. Jakubek's 6k time of 21:24 was just eight seconds off of Mary Kinyanjui of TCU's pace of 21:16. Jakubek earned first-team All-C-USA honors for the second consecutive year.
"Jodi definately had her best race of the season," said Uhrich. "Mary is a great runner, that is nothing to be ashamed of to be beaten by her. a coupl runners behind jodi were all-americans."
Sophomore Heidi Lindeman took seventh overall with a time of 22:03. Lindeman earned second-team All-C-USA honors for the second consecutive year. Also earning All-C-USA honors was junior Susie Emond who took 14th overall with a time of 22:18.
"They both have been running really well all year. it was nice to see them get the all-conference honor because they are well deserving."
Uhrich won his seventh C-USA Women's Cross Country Coach of the year award today. Earlier in the week, Uhrich was named C-USA Women's Cross Country Coach of the Decade as a part of the 10th Anniversary Celebration for C-USA.
Marquette leaves Conference USA with seven titles--more than any other women's cross country team. Marquette will join the BIG EAST Conference in 2005.
The men were led by Brent Des Roches who finished third overall with a time of 24:53. Des Roches earned first-team All-C-USA honors for the second consecutive year. It was Des Roches' highest career finish at a C-USA Championship meet.
"This is by far the best field there has ever ben in the conference on the men's side," said Uhrich. "Brent was battling some very good runners."
Marquette's next two finishers were Jason Crichton and Jeremy Williams who placed 18th (25:42) and 26th (26:04), respectively on the 8k course. Houston won the men's title.
"We had some trouble with injuries and missed some breaks," said Uhrich. "Last year, everything clicked, this year it didn't seem to work that way for the men. hopefully we can rebound next year."
The Marquette men and No. 30 women will next compete at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 13.
