The Marquette men?s and the No. 21 women?s cross country teams swept the Bradley Invite this evening under warm conditions in Peoria, Ill. Junior Jodi Jakubek and junior Brent Des Roches both turned in first-place finishes for their respective teams.
Jakubek finished the race with a time of 17:49. Freshman Cassie Peller was right behind Jakubek, finishing second overall with a time of 17:52.
?(Peller and Jakubek) were great,? said head coach Dave Uhrich. ?Jodi led pretty much the whole way and asserted herself. Cassie showed good poise as a freshman, slowly moving her way up to finish second. The rest did the same thing, they moved up real nice, Susie (Emond), Terri (Emond) and Kaitlyn Chambers started off a little slow but moved up considerably.?
Sophomore Heidi Lindeman was leading the race with 15 meters to go when she collapsed on the course. Head coach Dave Uhrich said Lindeman was suffering from dehydration and didn?t finish the race.
The Marquette women turned in this performance despite injuries to Michaela Courtney, Brianna Dahm and Allison Sauer?three of Marquette?s top runners.
On the men?s side, Des Roches was only four seconds off the course record and finished with a time of 21:41. Junior David Henderson took fourth with a time of 25:03.
?(Henderson?s race) was pretty exciting,? Uhrich said. ?He has taken a step up. He had as good a summer training as anyone I have coached. I think he is ready to have a good season and this meet is an indication of that.?
