Golden Eagles to play in Western Michigan Invitational
MILWAUKEE ? The Marquette women's tennis team begins its fall season at the 2004 Western Michigan Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Head coach Jody Bronson will take a full squad to the tournament, which includes four sophomores and four freshmen. The team started training this week and wastes little time before beginning competition.
"When you get only five days of work before the first time to compete, you have to observe what they are doing in practice, why they do what they do and when," Bronson said. "After this, we can concentrate on what we need to work on, and we can have a much more productive practice structure so we can start improving, little by little."
With no juniors or seniors on the squad, the learning curve for the 2004-05 season might be steeper than usual.
"Right now, we have to see how they can handle themselves in competition," Bronson added. "They've hit balls in practice, but now we have to see how they can handle the pressure of playing."
Joining Marquette in the competition are Ball State, Eastern Michigan, Illinois, UIC, Indiana and Western Michigan. The teams will compete in singles and doubles action beginning at 9 a.m. ET on Friday, Sept. 17. The tournament continues through Sunday, Sept. 19.
