Marquette senior Chris Lee scored just four minutes into tonight's match to lead the Golden Eagles (2-4-0) past Ill.-Chicago (1-7-0) at Valley Fields.
An Ill.-Chicago defender was trying to clear the ball and Lee caught it, beat another Flame defender to put the ball over goalkeeper Jeff Engelbrecht for his third goal of the season.
"It was nice to score early because it relaxed everybody," "I thought we should have converted more chances after that, but we still played well."
Marquette controlled the ball for most of the first half, taking 14 shots and allowing only six. Marquette freshman goalkeeper Steven Grow recorded four saves tonight.
Junior Matt Soper scored Marquette's second goal on assists from Lee and Matt Blouin. Lee and Blouin both possessed the ball in the box, but couldn't find open shots, Soper had a shot and found the right corner of the net for his first goal of the season.
"They had two breakaway chances where i thought they should have scored, if they had scored maybe we would have been a little more efficient in scoring that goal. I'm thrilled with the second goal, it was well played."
The Golden Eagles return to Valley Fields on Saturday to resume their Conference USA season against UAB. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
