Marquette Begins Three Match Homestand
UIC, UAB set to make visits to Valley Fields this week
Coming off their first victory of the season on Friday over Drake and a hard fought loss at (16) Creighton, the Golden Eagles will kick off a weeklong homestand beginning Wednesday against UIC. Marquette will face off against two C-USA rivals beginning with UAB on Saturday at the Valley before closing the homestand against Louisville on Wednesday, Sept. 29.
Scouting UIC
The Flames enter Wednesday night?s game with a 1-6-0 record and most recently dropped a 2-0 match to Detroit. The Flames only victory of 2004 came at home against cross-town rival DePaul on Sept. 15. UIC and DePaul were knotted at 1-1 until Kenneth Nightingale scored a goal in the second overtime. Leading the scoring for the Flames is sophomore forward Tonci Skroce who has three goals so far this year. The Flames have used three goalkeepers this season. Jeff Engelbrecht was UIC?s most recent starter in goal and stopped three shots in the loss to Detroit.
Scouting UAB
The Blazers visit Milwaukee with a 3-3 record and have won two straight matches. Playing in their own tournament last weekend, UAB defeated Charlotte on Friday, 4-1 and Western Kentucky on Sunday, 5-0. The offensive explosion was led by Jarson Monteiro who scored goals in both matches and added an assist against Western Kentucky. Maurice Hughes scored a goal in each match and also had assists in both matches for the Blazers. The Blazers started two different goalkeepers in the two matches, Jeremy Drake recorded four saves against Western Kentucky and Melford James had six against Charlotte.
In The Polls
The 2003 National Champion Indiana Hoosiers remain No. 1 in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 Poll. Previous Golden Eagle opponent Saint Louis is tenth in the same poll and another previous opponent, Creighton (16), is also ranked.
Forty Years Ago
Although UIC and Marquette have only met five times prior to Wednesday their series is among the oldest in Marquette history. The Flames were one of eight teams on Marquette?s schedule in 1964, the first year Marquette fielded a men?s soccer team. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie on Oct. 24, 1964 in Chicago---Marquette?s first-ever tie.
Good To Be Home
Marquette will be kicking off its longest homestand of the season of three with Wednesday?s game against UIC. After Marquette plays host to Louisville on Sept. 29, only two Valley Fields matches remain as Marquette will play eight of its last ten matches on the road.
Movin? Up The Charts
Chris Lee scored a goal in Friday?s win over Drake and one in Sunday?s loss to Creighton, giving him 27 career goals. The 27 goals puts him in a three-way tie for eighth on Marquette career list with Cory Butler and Marshall Morehead. Lee entered the season tied for tenth with Jim Tutaj on the all-time shots list with 148. His ten shots so far this season are two shots short of Butler and the eighth slot on that list.
Around Conference USA...
USF remains the only undefeated team in the conference with a perfect 5-0 record and 2-0 in conference play. Terron Amos of East Carolina leads the conference in goals with seven so far this season. Amos also leads the league in points with 16. UAB?s A.J. Robles leads the league in saves with 31.
America?s Heartland
The Great Midwest is well represented by the Marquette men?s soccer team as the opening day roster includes eight student-athletes from Illinois, seven from Wisconsin and four from Kansas. Other states represented include Minnesota, Indiana, Missouri, and Michigan. Freshman Mike Manone will have to trade the desert in for farmland as he is the only member of the team from Arizona.
Schedule Change
Marquette?s game at Wis.-Milwaukee has been changed to Tuesday, Oct. 26. The game, at Engelmann Field, will still begin at 3 p.m.
