MILWAUKEE --- The Marquette men's soccer team dropped a close 2-1 match to UAB tonight at Valley Fields despite outshooting the Blazers 23-12 in the match.
"I think it was a desire, we really want to win" said head coach Steve Adlard. "We are hungry to win. Somehow or another in this game we took shots we normally don't take. I'm pleased to say that though."
UAB struck first on Leanardo DeOliveira's shot from Jerson Monteiro at 15:48.
Marquette answered back at 39:05 on Chris Lee's shot that found the upper left corner of the net. The breakaway had Danny Mullin serve the ball into Lee who found Ryan Nikchevich on the right side. Nikchevich crossed the ball back to Lee who beat one defender and scored from 12 yards out.
The Golden Eagles had a number of chances to score following that including a number of solid shots by Bryan Dahlquist, two were saved and one hit the right post.
"He (Dahlquist) took some great shots, but they were just saved," said Adlard. "Lee was able to find him a couple times. That was a nice addition to our game, I liked that part of the game."
The second Blazer goal came with just under four minutes to play in the match as Sandy Gbandi found Maurice Huges who beat Marquette goalkeeper Steven Grow for the game winner. Grow had four saves in the match for Marquette.
"I thought we played the best we played all year," added Adlard. "We played with flair, with belief, with skill. We dominated large parts of the game. I feel disappointed for the to to play that well and not come away with it."
Marquette returns to Valley Fields to face Louisville on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
