MILWAUKEE ? The Marquette (2-5-1, 0-2-1) men?s soccer team played to a 2-2 tie tonight against Louisville (3-3-3, 0-0-1) at Valley Fields. The teams played an even first half as neither could find the goal, but were able to get shots off. The Golden Eagles had six shots in the first half, compared to four by the Cardinals.
Louisville?s David Guzman struck first at 51:20 when Jelani Grant found Guzman on a breakaway. Guzman was able to beat the Marquette defense and found the right side of the goal for the first score of the game.
The Golden Eagles came right back when an attempted clear out by Louisville resulted in a corner kick for Marquette. Blair Kohlmeyer was able to find a streaking Danny Mullin who was able to get his head on the ball for a goal at 60:11.
The scoring continued just eight minutes later as Guzman intercepted a Marquette attempt at a clear out and left the ball for Anthony Celebre. Celebre shot across the goal and found the left side of the net as Louisville took a 2-1 advantage.
Again, Marquette came right back and Chris Lee chipped in a shot from five yards out on passes from Pat Knoelke and Nathan Sabich. The game stood tied with 13 minutes left in regulation.
Marquette controlled the ball for much of the two overtime periods, narrowly missing the goal twice in each overtime period. Shots by Lee, Bryan Dahlquist and Matt Blouin were inches from being game winners.
Steven Grow played the first half for Marquette in goal and recorded two saves, while Andy Kroll played the rest of the match and recorded one save.
Marquette kicks off a three-match road trip with a game at Memphis on Oct. 2.
