Wisconsin Downs Men's Soccer, 3-0

Early allowed penalty kick hampers MU effort

MADISON, Wis. ? A penalty kick goal in the 15th minute forced Marquette to play catch up, and ultimately lose to Wisconsin, 3-0.

The penalty kick was created in a situation in which defender Mike Carlson made a tackle of a Wisconsin forward. The tackle appeared to be a relatively clean tackle in which Carlson wound up with the ball, but the foul was called and the penalty kick was awarded. Victor Diaz finished off the opportunity passed MU keeper Steven Grow in the 15th minute.

The Golden Eagles (5-7-1) were forced to play catch up for the rest of the match. As the contest progressed, Marquette substituted defenders for forwards and played the game with just two defenders late. Wisconsin scored their final two goals on counter attacks on the Marquette defenders. Christopher Ede scored in the 82nd and 88th minute to seal the Wisconsin win.

"We spent a lot of time pressing forward and missed a couple of chances," head coach Steve Adlard said. "We played very good football, except we just couldn't put the ball in the net. In the end, it's the result that matters."

While pressing forward Marquette created opportunities, keeping the shot totals close, with 10 to Wisconsin's 11. A pair of Marquette chances were cleared deep in the Wisconsin (5-9) zone, ending Golden Eagle scoring chances.

"When you are clutching at chances and pressing forward, it becomes difficult," Adlard said. "The reality is they played very well and just didn't get the result."

Marquette returns to action on Saturday, October 22 at 7 p.m., hosting Georgetown at Valley Fields.
