Dahlquist goal not enough for MU in final BIG EAST match
MILWAUKEE ? The Marquette men's soccer team bounced back after being down two goals, but lost to West Virginia, 3-1, at Valley Fields.
The Golden Eagles (5-10-1, 1-8-1 BIG EAST) fought back from the 2-0 halftime deficit, finding the net five minutes into the second half. Junior Bryan Dahlquist collected a cross to the far post from senior Blair Kohlmeyer. Dahlquist strike came from six yards out to cut the deficit to one.
"We gave up an unnecessary goal early and we built our pressure," head coach Steve Adlard said. "We did build up and scored a good goal, which was nice for us."
West Virginia (10-6-2, 6-4-1 BIG EAST) scored in the ninth minute for its first strike. Zak Boggs capitalized after an initial shot by Pat Carroll. MU keeper Andy Kroll made the first save on the Carroll shot, but Boggs collected the loose ball for the score.
In the 35th minute, Dan Stratford connected on a penalty kick to Kroll's right. That PK was created after a cross hit the hand of MU defender Mike Carlson.
Marquette had other chances in the second half. Just minutes after coming in as a substitute, junior Matt Blouin, in his first match back from injury, placed a header from a Kohlmeyer cross that was just off target. MU dominated the early possession of the second half, out-shooting West Virginia 8-3 in the first 30 minutes of the second half.
"Blouin did about as well as expected given the layoff," Adlard said. "It was a nice beginning for him."
West Virginia increased the margin to 3-1 with 16 minutes to play when Pat Carroll played a ball on a cross that ended up going in after being redirected by an unintentional contact by MU defender Nathan Sabich. The cross deflected off Sabich's thigh and past MU keeper Steven Grow, who was moving to his right to cover the cross.
"We were building up and we got the wind taken out of our sails on a freakish play," Adlard said.
Marquette concludes its season taking on Wis.-Milwaukee on Monday, October 31 at Valley Fields at 7 p.m.
"There will be a great passion from both teams in the (UWM) game and I look for it to be a great spectacle for the fans," Adlard said. "I think it will be like the second half tonight with speed, missed shots, passion and competitiveness."
