Golden Eagles own offensive opportunities, but can't claim victory
MILWAUKEE ? Despite out-shooting Pittsburgh by 13, Marquette couldn't capitalize on its opportunities and lost, 1-0, at Valley Fields.
The Golden Eagles had 12 shots in the first half to the Panthers one, but the game was scoreless at the half. Play was more balanced in the second half, but Marquette (4-6-1, 1-5-1 BIG EAST) still owned the majority of possession. However, Pittsburgh scored in the 52nd minute on its only corner kick of the game.
Steve Cavalier set up the ball in the corner and swung it toward the Marquette goal. MU keeper Andy Kroll couldn't clear the opportunity before Matt Firster put the ball in the net to put Pittsburgh (3-7-1, 2-5 BIG EAST) up by a goal.
"It's a huge disappointment to dominate the game and lose," head coach Steve Adlard said. "You are always vulnerable when you miss you chances."
The Golden Eagles had two significant chances in the second half. Freshman midfielder Mike Klemm had an opportunity in the 54th minute from seven yards away, but Pittsburgh keeper Jordan Marks made one of his nine saves on the effort. Two minutes later junior forward Pat Knoelke hit the post on a shot that went past Marks.
"We created a ton of chances tonight, but you have to have that fighting spirit to finish these chances," Adlard said. "We're very disappointed because you score one tonight and you feel really good. We didn't and we feel like we let everyone down tonight."
The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, October 12 at 7 p.m., taking on Wis.-Green Bay at Valley Fields.
