Marquette senior forward Chris Lee was chosen by the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer in the league's supplemental draft on Feb. 4. Lee was chosen in the fourth round by the Crew.
"I'm real excited," said Lee. "I had an idea that it may happen, but i guess it is still surprising that it happened. I am looking forward to helping the team. Playing professionally gives me something to work for."
Lee will finish out his academic career at Marquette before joining the Crew in May following Marquette's graduation. Lee will join the team in training sessions at various times during the spring.
"The last week and a half, I really thought my career was over," said Lee. "I now have something to look forward to and work for, I'm glad to have that back. I have been playing soccer my whole life and now i will take it to another level."
The Crew play at Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. It is one of the few soccer-only stadia in the MLS.
"They have a reputation for having great fans, it will be a great atmosphere to compete," said Lee of the 22,555-seat stadium.
Lee left Marquette as the school's fourth all-time leading goal scorer. He was an All- Conference USA First-Team pick in 2003 and a second-team selection in 2004. He played on an injured knee for most of his senior season and still tallied 10 goals and three assists. As a junior, his 14 goals led Conference USA.
