?There are so many teams we have never played in the BIG EAST and the conference is deep,? said head coach Steve Adlard. ?Every game is going to mean something, so you have to get it done and not count anyone out. There will be no easy games.?
After four non-conference matches against Ohio State, Penn State, Drake and St. Francis (Pa.) early in September, the Golden Eagles will begin conference play in New York playing talented Syracuse and St. John?s squads. Marquette will host Cincinnati and Louisville at Valley Fields the last weekend in September before returning to the east coast to battle last season?s BIG EAST tournament champions Connecticut. A three game homestand will bring BIG EAST regular season conference champion Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and in-state rival Wisconsin-Green Bay to Valley Fields early in October.
The Golden Eagles will return to the east coast for the third time to play at Providence prior to renewing its annual rivalry with Wisconsin in Madison on Oct. 19. A match at Seton Hall will close out their regular season road schedule, and Marquette will wrap-up the month of October hosting West Virginia and crosstown rival Wisconsin-Milwaukee before heading into the BIG EAST Tournament. Should the Golden Eagles make it past the first round held at campus sites, they will travel to Storrs, Conn., to play in the quarterfinal round.
?We have a balanced home and away schedule, however we haven?t played a Friday-Sunday schedule in quite some time, so it will be an adjustment for our players. I am confident that will contend in each game and may even surprise a few along the way.?
Marquette suffered its first losing season in 2004 in six seasons and just third overall since Adlard took over head coaching reigns in 1992, amassing an unfortunate record of 6-11-1 overall, 2-6-1 Conference USA. Losing just three seniors, the 2005 season should not be the same story as this team returns two senior starters including Third Team All-Conference USA selection junior Ryan Dahlquist, senior Blair Kohlmeyer and a core group of juniors with the ability and experience to contend.
