Women's Tennis Completes Day Two at Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Juniors Erin Watkins and Shannon Brown along with freshmen Kylie Moore and Elly Strother picked wins in the second day of women's tennis action at the Wolverine Invitational at the Varsity Tennis Center on Sept. 30.

Marquette got the best of Purdue as the Golden Eagles took four of seven matches from the Boilermakers in consolation singles play. Strother battled back after a 7-5 first set loss to Whitney Reys, but came back to win the second set (6-3) and the tiebreaker, 1-0, for the win. Moore dominated her Purdue counterpart, Whitney Melhorn, 6-0, 6-1, and Brown had a similar result against Reys, giving up just one point for a 6-1, 6-0 win.

Watkins consecutive wins Saturday came first against Purdue's Alejandra Boeker, 6-3, 6-2. Watkins later downed Allie Shafner of Michigan, 6-4, 6-4.

In the main singles draw, Michigan's Tania Mahtani advanced to play her Wolverine teammate, Chisako Sugiyama for the championship.

Competition will wrap-up Sunday, Oct. 1, with the singles championship match, singles consolation matches and doubles round robin play.
