MILWAUKEE - Sophomore defender Katie Kelly collected her second consecutive national honor announced Wednesday as she was named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week for her contributions in Marquette's three consecutive wins last week. This is Kelly's second honor of the week as she was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, Oct. 23, for the second consecutive week. It is also her third selection by Soccer Buzz for her career as she was named to the Elite Team of the Week last week and on Sept. 14, 2005.
Kelly earned the honor for her play last week tallying five points in three games. She started off with two assists on Oct. 17 in a 5-0 win over Wis.-Green Bay. Kelly followed that performance up providing a stellar defensive effort to help Marquette pull-off a 1-0 overtime win at Syracuse while playing a man down. She capped the weekend involving herself in both goals Marquette scored to hold off St. John's, 2-1, on Oct. 22. Kelly set up junior Christy Zwolski goal and then notched the game-winner. Kelly fired a perfect free kick to the upper left corner to help Marquette come away with the win.
With five points for the week, Kelly moved up on the points list to fourth place with 10. The sophomore defender has been Marquette's secret weapon on offense dishing a team-leading eight assists for the season. The eight assists also match the third best single season mark.
