MILWAUKEE - Despite hard fought singles play from junior Francina Bonnelly and freshman Robin Metzler, the Marquette women's tennis team fell to no. 51 Wisconsin at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 2-6 in dual matches on the season.
"This was not a good day for us, we did not play well," said head coach Jody Bronson. "We tried and tried, but our shots weren't what they needed to be and our shot selection was not good either. When you make mistakes against the 51st ranked team in the nation you are going to pay, and we paid today."
The doubles duos of sophomore Maria Calbeto and freshman Lauren Little at no. 1 doubles, Bonnelly and junior Dominika Dabrowski at no. 2 and juniors Katie Donovan and Andrea Bukacek at no. 3 were all defeated, 8-1, by their respective Wisconsin counterparts.
In singles action, Wisconsin picked up the first win at no. 4 singles when Elizabeth Carpenter defeated Dabrowski, 6-0, 6-2. From there, the Badgers continued their dominance.
Bonnelly gave Chelsea Nusslock a battle at the third slot fighting back from a first 6-2 first set defeat to narrowly losing the second set 7-5.
"Fran played tough," added Bronson. "She settled down in the second set and got after it, but when you dig a hole to begin with, it is hard to get out of it."
At no. 6 singels, Metzler was never gave up and continued to battle through her injury. But in the end, Metzler didn't come up with the result and was defeated by Wisconsin's Morgan Tuttle, 6-2. 6-3.
"Robin played hard and continues to scrap, said Bronson. "She really put forth a great effort today."
The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, February 19, when they play host to BIG EAST Conference foe Rutgers at the Haelfar Tennis Stadium at 10 a.m. The match against the Scarlet Knights also marks Marquette's first ever conference match as a member of the BIG EAST.
"We are going to need to show up Sunday against Rutgers," Bronson explained. "This is an important match for us because it is our first conference match. We need to make our shots and play smarter."
