Women's Tennis Falls 7-0 to Ohio State

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team was swept by Ohio State, 7-0, at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium. With the loss, the Golden Eagles 4-8 in spring dual play on the season.
"For the most part we didn't play well today," said head coach Jody Bronson. "We didn't show up. We didn't follow through on strategy and you can't expect to win if you don't show up. We need to believe in ourselves that we can step it up on Sunday and play."
The Golden Eagles started strong in the doubles competition with freshman Lauren Little and sophomore Maria Calbeto winning at the no. 1 position, 8-3. Junior Francina Bonnelly and sophomore Erin Watkins were defeated by Sonia Ruzimovsky and Angela DiPastina, 8-5 at the number two slot, 8-5, knotting the Golden Eagles and the Buckeyes at one doubles win each.
At the third doubles spot, freshman Robin Metzler and junior Dominika Dabrowski rallied to come back from a 7-3 deficit, but fell short and lost to Julie Blackmore and Emily Howard, 8-6, leaving Ohio State to clinch the doubles point.
"Lauren and Maria got a decisive win at no. 1 doubles. They earned that win", said Bronson. "Dominika and Robin showed so much heart and determination at no. 3 doubles. They were down 7-3 at one point and fought back losing just 8-6. I am really proud of they way those girls played today."
In singles action, the Buckeyes grabbed the first three singles wins at the no. 1, 2 and 6 positions to win the match. Caitlin O'Keefe downed Calbeto, 6-1, 6-3 at no. 1 singles, while Metzler and Little were both downed in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-2, respectively.
In the longest match of the afternoon at no. 3 singles, Watkins battled Blackmore, taking the match to a second set tiebreaker, but ended up losing, 7-6, 8-6.
The Golden Eagles will be back at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium taking on no. 37 New Mexico on on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
