MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team ended the weekend on a high note and defeated Wis.-Green Bay, 6-1, at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The Golden Eagles swept the doubles point and claimed all but one singles win en route to their first victory in five tries and improve to 4-11 on the season.
"Any win is a good win for us, it's been a while. It was good to end the weekend with a win," said head coach Jody Bronson. "I thought we got off to a great start with winning the doubles point because it is always the key to playing well in singles."
In doubles competition, the no. 3 doubles tandem of juniors Katie Donovan and Dominika Dabrowski took the first doubles win, 8-3, over Kristin Leeder and Kari Petrashek. Freshman Lauren Little and sophomore Maria Calbeto followed with a 8-3 decision over Heather Harding and Aschley Jurgella at no. 1 doubles to clinch the doubles point.
The Golden Eagles earned a sweep in doubles after the no. 2 doubles duo of junior Francina Bonnelly and sophomore Erin Watkins took down Jenny Tan and Megan Gregory, 8-6.
Watkins got things started for Marquette in singles play with a convincing win over Gregory, 6-0, 6-1, at no. 3 singles. Calbeto dominated Harding at the top singles spot in straight sets, 6-1,6-1, while Little followed holding on to defeat Tan, 6-0, 6-4. Dabrowski got off to a hot start at no. 5 singles, not surrendering a point in the first set and downing Leeder, 6-0, 6-2.
The Golden Eagles last win came from Bonnelly at no. 4 singles as she grabbed a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Jurgella. Green Bay got its only point of the day at no. 6 singles due to a forfeit by Marquette.
"We picked it up in singles after being a bit flat in doubles play," added Bronson. "Our no. 3 doubles played great. I thought they did a great job of getting it done giving us our first doubles win."
The Golden Eagles will take next weekend off and be back in action at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium on Saturday, March 25 when it hosts Chicago State and South Dakota in a doubleheader beginning at 9 a.m.
