East Lansing, Mich. – Marquette University women's tennis competed in the Michigan State Invitational this weekend, with the Golden Eagles earning victories in both doubles and singles competition.
In doubles play, Lizzie Stuckslager and Emmerson White earned an 8-5 victory over Eastern Michigan's Valentina Salek and Sabrina Tolstova.
Marquette's Elise Barnstedt turned in a standout performance, earning three singles victories throughout the weekend.
"Elise played some unbelievable tennis all weekend and won her flight! It was so much fun seeing her play at such a high level and beat Northwestern, DePaul, and Eastern Michigan. She showed so much fight and belief on the court and played aggressive with great margins outdoors," Head Coach Barnett said.
Barnstedt opened with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Aely Arai of Northwestern. She followed with a 7-6, 6-2 win over DePaul's Roberta Sechi before closing out the weekend with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Eastern Michigan's Valentina Salek.
Barnett expressed that Elena Duva for the Golden Eagles shows much consistency in singles play. "Elena continues to improve each week and had 2 very strong wins and chances in a loss to DePaul. Such good variety in her game and she is always someone I can count on to compete and fight."
Duva recorded the two singles victories by defeating Eastern Michigan's Iva Davena, 6-4, 6-4, before earning a three-set victory over Eastern Michigan's Kseniia Saenko, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Stuckslager and White each added to Marquette's singles success by each earning one singles victory. White defeated Western Michigan's Frida Weijerman, 6-3, 6-3, while Stuckslager earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over DePaul's Eleanor Cochran.
