MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team got singles wins from freshman Lauren Little, sophomore Erin Watkins and junior Francina Bonnelly but it was not enough as Rutgers' won the three singles matches and captured the doubles point to defeat the Golden Eagles at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium, 4-3.
In doubles action, Golden Eagles were unable to come away with the point but did pick up a win at no. 2 doubles. The tandem of Watkins and Bonnelly played to a tiebreaker to defeat Katrina Elder-Bush and Shmakova, 8-7 (2).
Marquette seemed to bounce back in singles play winning at the no. 2, no. 3 and no. 5 slots to lead 3-2 with two matches remaining. Bonnelly started things off with a 6-3, 6-2 convincing win over Anela Dujsic at no. 5 singles. Little was next with 6-1, 6-2 decision over Dana Gordon at second position and Watkins fought to defeat Alina Balasa at no. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-4.
At no. 1 singles, sophomore Maria Calbeto battled to take her match with Elder-Bush to three sets. After losing the first set, 6-3, Calbeto won the second, 6-4, but was unable to hold on dropping the third set, 6-1, leaving the Scarlet Knights to tie things up 3-3.
The last match, no. 4 singles, proved to be another three-set thriller for the Golden Eagles with Dabrowski taking on Ketevna Shmakova. Dabrowski took the first set, 6-4, but was unable to carry the momentum forward and was defeated in the last two sets, 6-3, 6-3.
"We fought really hard today," said head coach Jody Bronson. In doubles we didn't play smart and made mental mistakes. but we fought hard. In our singles matches we came out ready and excited to play. We lost some close matches. The little things still need to be tweaked which in the end made the difference between a win and a loss."
The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, February 25, at 1 p.m. against Cincinnati in Kalamzoo, Mich.
