MILWAUKEE - The Marquette men's tennis team won its first dual match of the spring season as it defeated Wright State, 6-1, at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
"We needed to rebound today and we did," said head coach Steve Rodecap. "We came out of the gates strong and maintained our composure through the rest of the match. We have a young, but talented lineup and the key is to continue to make our bad days look better."
The Golden Eagles rallied to win the doubles point. After Eiginats Vedrickas and Ian Kawas were defeated by Lance Koetter and Nicolas Camalleri at No. 1 doubles, 8-2, the no. 3 doubles tandem of Trent Hagan and Stephen Shao downed Brian Butt and Tim Hershner, 8-5, and Brett Binkley and Peter Van Lieshout won 8-3 at the second doubles spot clinching the doubles point.
Marquette kept the momentum on its side and took the first two singles wins to lead 3-0. At no. 6 singles Greg Sirotek defeated Michael Hall, 6-0, 6-0, and Shao defeated Dan Sundersingh at no. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-0.
Vedrickas was beat at the no. 1 position, 6-3, 6-4, by Koetter giving Wright State its lone win of the day. Kawas, Hagan and Binkley cleaned up the victory, as each won at their respective singles spots.
"Our winning the doubles point really set the tone for the rest of the match," added Rodecap. The energy Pete (Van Lieshout) and Brett (Binkley) played with at no. 3 doubles helped Trent (Hagan) and Stephen (Shao) win their match. We won two quick singles matches to lead 3-0 early. Ian (Kawas) played with a lot of intensity at no. 2 singles and we really needed that."
The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, February 4 when they host Eastern Illinois at Helfaer Tennis Stadium at 1 p.m.
