MILWAUKEE - With a strong doubles effort in both matches, the Marquette men's tennis team was able to defeat Chicago State and Western Illinois, today at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium. Their record goes to 4-1 in the dual match season.
Freshman, Trent Hagan was unbeatable today, teaming up with Stephen Shao at no. 2 doubles and beating Dejan Avramovic of Chicago State, 6-2, 6-2 and Justin Junck of WIU, 6-2, 6-0. The Leatherneck's duo of Junck and Neil Lesinski played tough against Marquette, exchanging sets until Shao and Hagan broke to win the match, 8-6.
"They had pretty good serves," Hagan said of Junck and Lesinski. "We did a good job on the return and were able to break. Getting the win in doubles, keeps the intensity high and gives us the mind set to win in our singles matches."
Marquette swept Chicago State, 7-0, in the morning match, earning the early doubles point. The tandem of Eigis Vedrickas and Ian Kawas were able to find momentum as they downed, Avramovic and Abram Mamahit, 8-1. Chicago State defaulted at no. 3 doubles and no. 6 singles.
Vedrickas was able to take away a win at no. 3 early in the day to Chicago State's Mamahit, 6-0, 6-2. He was not able to get a victory against Western Illinois' Martin Bostrom at no. 1, 6-4, 6-4.
"For us to be the team we have the potential to be, we need to get production from Eigis," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "I'm confident he can do it."
Senior Ricky Servoss stepped in and teamed up with Brett Binkley, to overtake the WIU's Josh Wittenberg and Michael Schild, 8-3.
"It was good to get two wins here today," Rodecap said. "Trent is playing very well for us as a freshman. We still have to get better at closing out matches. When we win first sets we have to come out and get the second."
The men will return to the courts next Saturday, at home, when they take on Southern Illinois at 9 a.m. at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
