MILWAUKEE - The Marquette volleyball team fell to no. 10 Notre Dame this afternoon, 3-1 (24-30, 30-28, 21-30, 27-30) in the Al McGuire Center in front of a record breaking crowd of 1,074 fans. The Golden Eagles drop to 8-7, 2-2 BIG EAST, while the Fighting Irish improve to 11-1, 3-0 BIG EAST.
Notre Dame earned the first win, 30-24. Marquette kept it close trading points with the Fighting Irish until a kill by Adrianna Stasiuk gave Notre Dame the advantage leading it to score five consecutive points en route to the first victory. Collectively, the fighting Irish hit 10.3 percent, but held Marquette to a -4.9 attack percentage.
Marquette stormed back in the second stanza, winning game two, 30-28. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 13-6 lead but the Fighting Irish rallied and tied the game up at 15 each. A kill by senior outside hitter Theresa Coughlin helped the Golden Eagles mount a 5-1 run but Notre Dame tied it up again at 28 apiece. Back-to-back kills from sophomore outside hitter Kim Todd and junior outside hitter Jamie Mueller clinched the game two victory and even the match up 1-1. Coughlin contributed a game-high 10 kills as the Golden Eagles hit a match high, 41.9 percent.
Notre Dame bounced back and won game three, 30-21 behind a match high 45.8 attack percentage. The two teams traded points in the early stage of the third game, but a kill by Mallorie Croal broke the point deadlock and the Fighting Irish grabbed a six- point advantage (16-10). The Golden Eagles could not relinquish the deficit as Notre Dame cruised to the game three win.
Game four proved to be the same story as the Fighting Irish led by six points for much of the game. However, the Golden Eagles did not back down and went on a 7-4 run, fending off four game points to come within three points of the Fighting Irish. In the end, Notre Dame came out on top claiming game four, 30-27, and the match, 3-1.
Coughlin and Mueller ended the day with double-doubles as Coughlin registered 21 kills and 11 digs for her seventh double-double of the season, while Mueller tallied 13 kills and 20 digs.
2005 BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year Lauren Brewster led Notre Dame with 16 kills, while Croal, Lauren Kelbley and Adrianna Stasiuk combined for 38 kills.
