MILWAUKEE - The Marquette men's tennis team closed out their eight match home streak with a win tonight against the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, 7-0.
The Golden Eagles won all three doubles matches. The duo of Brett Binkley and Pete Van Lieshout got the job done quickly against Scott Dickert and Eric Hines, winning 8-0. Eigis Vedrickas and Ian Kawas downed Tim Prudlow and Mark Goldin at no. 1, 8-5. Trent Hagan and Stephen Shao were able to defeat the Phoenix tandem of Matt Keesey and Eric Plaushines, 8-3.
"We had a tough loss against DePaul on Tuesday," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "Our guys were anxious to get back on the court. We've had intense practice over the past two days and it's nice to get out here and get a win."
Marquette used their momentum in singles play, winning straight first sets. Hagan let Green Bay's Goldin back into the match at no. 2, when he lost the second set 4-6. Hagan was able to comeback in the third winning 6-4.
At no. 1, Vedrickas out played Prudlow, winning 6-2, 6-1. Greg Sirotek got a win for the Golden Eagles at no. 5, downing Dickert, 6-0, 6-4.
"Our goal is to compete at all six spots," Rodecap said. "All six guys came out ready to go today and played with good intensity."
Kawas, Binkley and Shao were the other three Golden Eagles to come away with victories. Marquette will now look ahead to the HEB Collegiate Championships, where they will face some of the top ranked teams in the country.
"Our next matches are outdoors," said Rodecap. "We will be playing national ranked BYU first, so we have plenty of challenges ahead of us. I'm curious to see how our guys will step up."
