CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Marquette men's tennis team lost to the University of Nevada-Las Vegas today, in the final day of competition at the HEB Championships in Corpus Christi, Texas.
"We didn't play good doubles," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "We lost at no. 2 and no. 3 but we were winning at no. 1 when they came off."
Marquette was able to gain back some momentum in singles, with Ian Kawas winning the first set at no. 2, and Eigis Vedrickas competing well at no.1. However, Shao and Sirotek struggled at the bottom of the lineup, losing at five and six.
"In singles we played really well at one through four," Rodecap said. "I liked our energy today. We were competing at a high level. Unfortunately, we lost at five and six pretty quickly."
Rodecap credited seniors, Kawas and Vedrickas for helping raise the level of play.
"Eigis and Ian played really well in singles," he said. "Ian was close to winning the match when it got called. Eigis lost a close first set but was playing with much better energy. Those guys are competing better which is going to make our team better. If we continue to compete the way we did today, we are going to continue to improve."
The Golden Eagles will be back at home on Wednesday, when they take on UW Madison at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium at 5 p.m.
