ARLINGTON, VA. - In their first of three consecutive days of BIG EAST competition, the Marquette men's tennis team defeated the Georgetown Hoyas, 5-2, at the Army-Navy Country Club in Arlington, Va.
The Golden Eagles got the early 1-0 lead by winning all three doubles places. Seniors, Eigis Vedrickas and Ian Kawas defeated Kevin Walsh and Eric Conrad at no.1, 8-5. The tandem of Pete Van Lieshout and Brett Binkley won at no.2, 8-3. While freshmen, Stephen Shao and Trent Hagan got the job done at no. 3, beating Andrew Clayton and Kenneth Wong, 8-4.
"We got off to a good start," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "We came out here ready to play. Georgetown competed really well but we were able to go in and sweep the doubles."
Marquette was able to take a 3-0 lead as Vedrickas and Binkley got quick wins at no. 3 and no. 5. Eric Fleming secured the win by defeating the Hoya's Wong at no. 6, 6-4, 7-5.
"We won the first set at five positions and Trent came back after losing the first to win the second," Rodecap said. "We won quickly at one, five and six. I thought those guys played pretty well and got off the court quickly."
The Golden Eagles will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they take on BIG EAST foe Rutgers at 12:00.
"We know Rutgers is good and we are looking forward to playing them," said Rodecap. "They finished 2nd in the BIG EAST tournament last year so we are excited to play them."
