MILWUAKEE -
The Marquette men's soccer team held their first practice of the 2006 season on Wednesday, August 9. According to head coach Louis Bennett, the first training sessions went well.
"Being it the first day, I was pleased with what we accomplished," said Bennett, who is in his first season at Marquette.
Nothing out of the ordinary occurred during the first practice session of the season. The biggest thing the team accomplished was blending the large amount of newcomers with the veterans on the squad.
"In the big picture, everything is working out well," Bennett said. "We have an interesting blend of new guys and old guys who are getting acclimatized to each other and our system."
Marquette held its first practice at Uhlein Soccer Park. The field turf practice field at Valley Fields is expected to be ready by September 1 for both the men's and women's teams.
"The biggest thing is that we are waiting in anticipation for that practice field to be completed," Bennett said. " We trained on grass and hard astroturf today, so to have a facility of our own to practice will be welcomed."
The team has just three days of practice before it has its first exhibition test of the year. Marquette hosts Northwestern at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 12 at Valley Fields in the first of three preseason contests.
