Milwaukee - The Marquette University men's soccer team (2-9-1, 1-6-0 BIG EAST) dropped a 2-0 BIG EAST decision at Providence (6-5-1, 3-3-1 BIG EAST) Saturday afternoon.
Marquette is trying to position itself for one of 12 spots in the league's postseason tournament. The top six teams in each division advance to the championship. MU is currently seventh in the Blue Division.
"This one stings," head coach Louis Bennett said. "We felt good about how we were playing at halftime and were starting to control play in the second before two critical mistakes proved to be the difference.
"It may appear our results are very similar, but we are making a lot of progress and are ready to break this cycle," Bennett added.
Both squads struggled offensively in the opening 45 minutes. PC finished with a 6-2 advantage in shots, but only a 2-0 margin in attempts on goal.
The Friars opened the scoring at the 63:28 mark when PC's Ryan Maduro headed in a long throw past MU netminder Matt Pyzdrowski from five yards out. Providence put the contest out of reach with another scoring in the 77th minute.
MU's Tom Lynn had the squad's best scoring attempt in the second half, with his shot requiring a quality stop by Friar goalkeeper Timothy Murray.
"I thought our back line did a good job of keeping their forwards in check," Bennett said. "Matt Stummer and Mike Carlson were the leaders in the defense."
The first goal was originally ruled offside, but after a conference by the officiating crew the score was allowed. The second marker bounced off the crossbar before crossing the line.
The Golden Eagles take a break from BIG EAST play in their next outing, traveling to instate rival Wisconsin on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.
