NOTRE DAME, IND. - The Marquette men's and women's track and field teams concluded day two of the Meyo Invitational, Saturday, at the Loftus Sports Center in Notre Dame, Ind. Junior Cassie Peller ran a season best time of 4:51.71 in the mile, placing fourth in the event. It was the fourth top-four finish for the Golden Eagles on the weekend.
"We had quite a few BIG EAST qualifiers and improvements on our times today," said head coach Dave Uhrich. "Overall, it was a pretty good meet."
Senior Michaela Courtney and freshman Jayne Grebinski also ran well in the mile. Courtney, finishing eighth, qualified for the BIG EAST Indoor Championships with a time of 4:54.41. Grebinski recorded a personal best time in the event, running 5:04.07.
In the 800m, senior Kristina Malin placed 18th, qualifying for the conference meet in a personal-best time of 2:14.64. She also became the 10th fastest female student-athlete to ever run the event.
Freshman Sarah Verdoliva, also competing in the 800m, set a personal record with a time of 2:17.70.
Freshman Anna Weber became the fifth Golden Eagle to qualifying for the BIG EAST Championships in the 3,000m when she ran 10:12.31, finishing 28th.
On the men's side, both sophomores Tom Cassady and Antonio Jones set personal bests in the 400m, running 49.89 and 50:26.
Senior Tommy Schmitz also recorded a personal best time in the mile, finishing 12th in a time of 4:14.81.
A fourth personal record from the men's team came from sophomore Tyler Merten who ran 1:55.48 in the 800m.
A second Marquette squad also competed Saturday, at the Tad Metzger Invitational on the campus of Carthage College, in Kenosha, Wis. In the pole vault, senior Zach Pawlowski set a Golden Eagle record, clearing 15-7.75 to break his previous school mark of 14-11. He now holds both the indoor and outdoor (15-5) pole vault records.
Sophomore Carrie Schmid and freshman Elizabeth Wilke also had impressive performances in the pole vault. Schmid tied a school record held by junior Kristin Stoniecki of 11-9 3/4. She also now holds the indoor and outdoor (11-11 3/4) university records. Wilke cleared 11-5. Each has now qualified for the BIG EAST Indoor Championships.
Final results have yet to be submitted, but will be made available as soon as possible.
