DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - For the first time in head coach Steve Rodecap's four year tenure at Marquette, the men's tennis team defeated Northern Illinois, 6-1, today winning their third straight match on the road in Daytona Beach, Florida. With the win the Golden Eagles improve to 9-5.
Marquette cameout strong in doubles, winning at all three positions. The tandem of Brett Binkley and Mark Rutherford won a tiebreaker at one to beat Brian Livingston and Adam Ford, 9-8 (14-12).
"Today was definitely an emotional win for us," Rodecap said. "We were able to get wins at all three doubles positions which is good. I was really proud of the way we believed we could win this match. The conditions were tough here because it was very windy and warm."
In singles, the Golden Eagles were able to get wins at all positions except no. 3, where Rutherford lost to Adam Ford, 6-4, 6-1. Stephen Shao persevered through three sets to beat Alex Friesen at no. 2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 and Eric Fleming also walked away with a three set victory at no. 6, defeating Alfonso Monroy, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
"We did a good job of coming out and competing today," said Rodecap. "Everyone from top to bottom played well."
Marquette will head to Madison on Wednesday, March 21 to take on the #39 Wisconsin Badgers at 4 p.m.
"Wednesday will be a good opportunity for us to stay close to home and play a ranked team. The guys are really looking forward to it," said Rodecap.
