MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Marquette men's tennis team was perfect on the day as they defeated South Dakota State and Wisconsin-Green Bay, 7-0, at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium. With the wins the Golden Eagles improve to 11-7.
In the first match-up of the day Marquette showcased a new lineup against the Jacks. Trent Hagan teamed up with senior Tomek Czernuszewicz at no. 2 to take down Matt Gill and Jeff Hughes, 8-3.
In singles Czernuszewicz played in his first singles match of the season and defeated Matt Gill, 6-2, 6-3. Pete Van Lieshout was perfect against Kyle Warner, winning 6-0, 6-0.
The Golden Eagles used their momentum from earlier in the day and never looked back when they faced the Phoenix of Green Bay. Marquette was able to get wins at all three doubles spots. Brett Binkley and Mark Rutherford earned their 13th victory of the spring season when they defeated Tim Prudlow and Mark Goldin, 8-5.
In singles Niko Boulieris had a convincing win over Scott Dickert at no. 5, 6-2, 6-1. With the match already clinched, Green Bay's Prudlow fought back against Hagan to win the second set at no. 1. Hagan got up early in the tiebreaker 5-0 but Prudlow would not concede and closed the gap to within two points. Hagan was able to stay focused to closeout the tiebreaker and capture the win, 7-6(3), 5-7, 10-8.
"This team has gotten better throughout the season," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "These guys continue to play and practice hard. I thought we did a good job of staying focused today throughout both matches."
The Golden Eagles will have a two week hiatus before returning to the Helfaer Tennis Stadium on April 14 to take on Indianapolis in their final home match of the season.
