Eugene, Ore. - In just her second 1,500m race of the outdoor season, junior Cassie Peller finished seventh in a time of 4:24.55, qualifying for the NCAA Mideast Regional, Friday, at the Oregon Invitational at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The time was a personal best as she crossed the line as the top collegiate runner in the race.
"It was definitely worth the trip out here," said head coach Dave Uhrich. "It was perfect weather for distance running, a little cooler with a light breeze. Scott and Cassie had great races, and Tommy had a really good start in his as well."
Sophomore Scott Mueller was the seventh athlete across the line in the 10,000m and third collegiate runner. His time of 29:37.65 was a personal best as he became the second-fastest student-athlete in school history to run the event. Mueller's time was less than eight seconds off the NCAA Championship provisional qualifying mark (29:30.00).
Senior Tommy Schmitz also competed in the meet, running in the 1,500m. He had an exceptional start of the race, following the rabbits out in a blistering 1:58 after 800m, and finished seventh in his heat in a time of 3:53.59.
The remainder of the Golden Eagle team will compete in the Iowa Musco Twilight, tomorrow, in Iowa City, Iowa.
