Courtney, Mueller Qualify for NCAA Regional at Duke Invitational

DURHAM, N.C - The Marquette men's and women's track & field teams competed at the Duke Asics Invitational, Friday, at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, N.C., and turned the heads of many coaches, athletes and spectators from some of the major track programs from around the country. Highlighting the day for the Golden Eagles were Michaela Courtney and Scott Mueller. Courtney, running the 1,500m in a time of 4:25.88 to finish fourth, and Mueller, covering the 5,000m in a time of 14:06.85 to finish seventh, each qualified for the NCAA Regional.
"We had an excellent meet today," said head coach Dave Uhrich. "Michaela and Scott ran fantastic races and their qualifying for the NCAA Regional is due to their hard work today. We faced great competition and had many unbelievable efforts today. It was a great way to start the meet."
Kristina Malin outran 52 others en route to a first-place finish in the developmental 400m in a winning time of 56.89. Teammate Katlin Millin came in second (57.75) as each qualified for the BIG EAST Outdoor.
In the pole vault, Kristin Stoniecki finished fourth, matching the school record of 11-11.75 for the second consecutive weekend. Carrie Schmid cleared 11-5.75, matching her season best en route to an eighth-place finish. Elizabeth Wilke also cleared 11-5.75 to finish 10th. It was her career best.
Freshman Jayne Grebinski finished 10th in her first collegiate 5,000m in a time of 17:00.28 to qualify for the conference championships. She also became the 10th-fastest female to run the event in school history.
In the 10,000m, freshman Anna Weber finished second to become the ninth-fastest female to run in the event in school history. She also qualified for the BIG EAST Championships.
Also competing in the 1,500m was Cassie Peller, who finished 12th in a time of 4:30.72, qualifying for the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships.
On the men's side Brent Des Roches and Kyle Saginus finished second and seventh in the 10,000m. Des Roches' time of 30:15.65 was .17 seconds from tying his career best. Saginus covered the distance in 30:35.70. He became the fifth fastest to ever run the event at Marquette. Each qualified for the conference championships.
Tommy Schmitz ran a personal-best time of 3:48.21 in the 1,500m en route to a sixth-place finish, bettering his seed time for the conference championships.
Damian Anisko placed fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 178-2. Keith Jamerson (163-4), Mike Boedeker (157-6) and Mike Heim (157-1) all recorded personal best throws in the event, finishing ninth, 10th and 11th.
Day two of the meet begins tomorrow at 9 a.m. EDT.
