Marquette University Men's Soccer program introduced its first ever Men's summer league in the first week of June. The glow from Valley Fields on Wednesday nights during the summer was not just from the field's lights, but was from the 21 men that took part in the first MU Soccer Men's Summer League game. It was a well fought contest with some memorable moments.
In an attempt to give the soccer community another avenue to play the beautiful game, Marquette Men's Soccer program is holding a men's summer league that runs for seven weeks through out the summer.
With the official start held June 13 at Valley Fields, the game brings MU alumni, parents, businessmen and other soccer aficionados for a great deal of fun. The league continues on Wednesdays through the end of July, with the exception of July 4. Game times are scheduled for 8 p.m.
"I wanted to give men an opportunity to learn more about the game as well as the opportunity to enjoy the game during the summer," said Khaled El-Ahmad, a Marquette men's soccer assistant and founder of the league. "This is also a social opportunity to exchange information as I have asked the participants to bring their business cards and contact information to share. There is no better way to get to know someone until you have competed with or against him. That was evident as many of us went to Sobleman's for our post-game celebration."
Participants begin with a warm up with some techincal drills before moving into into tournament-like games. At the end the group takes part in excersices and a cool down drill.
"It was a blast to see al these men from 20-55 do an ab workout that our student-athletes do every day," El-Ahmad said. "You will be surprised how strong they are. So with the first night being a success, I urge you to bring your friends. You can also bring your kids to play on the side."
The games are open to all skill levels as it has a pick up theme behind with new teams being created every week.
