Opening Statement
"This game really wasn't about winning or losing, it was about our love and support of the Monfre family and everything that they are going through. As you can imagine, we are a very drained and an emotionally spent team after spending two hours at the wake last night and then going to Erin Monfre's mom's funeral today. All that we tried to do is to honor her family by playing as hard as we could. We know that it wasn't pretty and we know we turned the ball over, missed shots and free throws, but we fought. We did the best we could. We were committed to do everything we could to get through this very difficult time. At the end of the day we just want to support a teammate that we love so much and care about. It really puts things into perspective about what we do here and using the gifts that God has given us to the best of our ability. We know Maureen is smiling on us from heaven and looking after us. She is in a great place and out of pain. Anything we can do to help the Monfre family move on and be a support to them is what we will do."
On getting off to good start, then slower finish:
"We did get off to a great start and I was thrilled to get off to that start, but I knew that we were going to hit a bump. I'm not surprised at all. This was probably the most difficult game I have ever coached in my life, and looking to our players this was probably the most difficult game they've had to play. We can't underestimate what this team ahs gone through and we're trying to be there for Erin. It is important, and we want to win, but it really isn't important. Today was about togetherness and the reason that we are all here at Marquette. When you're at the institution that we're at, the support that we feel and the support that their family has been given, that is what it is about and that is why people choose to come here. I loved the character of tonight and the way they fought through a very difficult thing. We easily could have folded when we got sloppy. We easily could have folded when we went down by three, but we fought our way back. I couldn't be more proud of what they did. Now we all just need to move forward."
Junior center Kelly Lam
On her rebounding:
"Basically it is a frame of mind. It is all about the fight and who wants it more. Today especially, I was thinking more of where the ball was going to go. I was trying to get to the weak side of the line, a lot of my offensive rebounds were weak sided. Our team especially has a hard time rebounding inside."
Junior guard Krystal Ellis
On not forcing her game against a defense:
"The coaches baskically told me to cut hard. If I can't get the shot off, then somebody else will because there is going to be on-on-one in the post and the guards would penetrate, so I know that if I don't get the shot off, someone else will."
On frustration with not making shots:
"It does get frustrating, but I've got to keep playing. My teammates encourage me to keep shooting."
On her effort this evening:
"Even though I had 30 points last game, there were some post players that stepped up and had big games. This game, the majority of the team scored in some way, so it wasn't necessary for me to score 30 points. The rest of the team stepped up and four us had double figures."
