MILWAUKEE -- Marquette will attempt to reclaim the coveted "Milwaukee Cup" this Wednesday as the Golden Eagles get set to renew their annual rivalry with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. at Engelmann Field.
"Our non-conference games are bonus games," said Marquette head coach Louis Bennett. "This is good for the city. Two division one teams playing across town, and it's always been a spirited rivalry game. Certainly, if you're a soccer fan you look forward to this. The lads are going to enjoy playing in the game. We're all going to be looking forward to playing in a game like this."
MU has not been in possession of the Cup, a traveling trophy awarded to the winner of the annual derby, since the 2003 season when the Golden Eagles defeated their crosstown rival UWM by final of 2-1. The Panthers own a 25-7-3 all-time advantage in the series. Last year's match ended in a 1-1 draw at Valley Fields.
UWM scored three unanswered goal to claim a 3-2 victory over the Golden Eagles in 2006, the last time the two teams met on the east side. That game drew a record 3,256 fans to Engelmann Field.
Bennett, who spent 10 seasons as head coach of UWM and led the Panthers to five consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, hopes to get Marquette back on the winning track. The Golden Eagles suffered back-to-back 1-0 losses to fellow in-state rival Wisconsin and No. 20 Connecticut.
MU is currently 2-7-4 overall, including six losses decided by a single goal. Meanwhile, the Panthers picked up their first Horizon League victory of the season at Loyola this past Saturday to improve to 4-6-5 overall.
