MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team earned a pair of wins Sunday afternoon at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium defeating Northern Iowa, 6-1, and UW-Milwaukee, 7-0. The victories put Marquette at 3-7 overall on the season.
"We deserved to win today," said head coach Jody Bronson. "We have overcome many injury and our player have had to step up. We persevered and believed in ourselves today. we are starting to see what we are capable of."
The Golden Eagles started the day off on the right foot by winning all three doubles matches to go ahead 1-0 entering singles play. The No. 2 duo of freshman Rachael Hush and senior Erin Watkins were first off the court with an 8-2 win over Meghana Paritala and Ashton Schwerin. At No. 1, senior Maria Calbeto and freshman Christina Ruiz took care of Sampada Kanade and Taynara Moraes, 8-3, to help MU go ahead 1-0.
In singles play, Marquette won three straight matches at Nos. 3, 4 and 5 to secure the win. Hush handily defeated Moraes, 6-0, 6-1at No. 4, and junior Robin Metzler dominated Diana Mendez, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 5. Ruiz showed poise at No. 3 as she came from behind, 5-2, to take the first set, 7-5, and held Laia Gonzalez-Garrido scoreless in the second set, 6-0.
Sophomore Maggie Wilson earned her first win of the dual season in the form of a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Caroline Hannes at No. 6.
The sixth team point against the Panthers came in another come-from-behind effort by Calbeto. She was down 5-2 in the first set before winning five straight games to the first set 7-5. Calbeto finished off the win with a 6-3 second set victory.
"Winning the doubles point was so key going into singles play," said Bronson. "The team responded in singles play and put together a solid victory over the panthers. We are continuing to not let challenges hold us back from what we are capable of doing."
Marquette handed the Panthers their first loss of the season.
Against UW-Milwaukee, the Golden Eagles cruised to the doubles point winning 23 of a possible 24 total set points. Ruiz and Calbeto and Brown and Wilson won 8-0 at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively. Hush and Watkins took an 8-1 win at No. 2 to complete the sweep.
Marquette got a quick win from Brown at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-0 over Panther Jenna Felscher to go ahead 2-0. The Golden Eagles went up 3-0, as Ruiz followed with a 6-0, 5-0 (ret), over Martina Schnapp at No. 2
Calbeto earned her second win at No. 1 to clinch the win for MU. Calbeto never trailed and defeated Kelly Drvaric, 6-2, 6-3.
Strother came out on top, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 and Wilson rallied after dropping her second set to win the tiebreaker and the match, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4, at No. 4.
The Golden Eagles will open BIG EAST play on Sunday, Feb. 24, when they host Syracuse at 9 a.m., at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
