Track and Field Concludes Two Days at the Indiana Relays

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Marquette men's and women's track team completed two days of competition in the Indiana Relays Open hosted by Indiana University, in Bloomington, Ind., Friday and Saturday.
"Overall this was a really good meet for us and a good weekend," head coach Bert Rogers said. "We had a lot of personal bests and BIG EAST qualifiers, so it was a solid meet. Notre Dame next weekend will be a big national competition and we're looking forward to competing.
On Friday, Mark Kopecki and Nick Szczech finished first and second in the mile with times of 4:16.08 and 4:16.60 respectively, both were personal best's.
Nick Byom placed sixth in the high jump, clearing 2.00m.
Cassie Peller finished fifth in the 800m run, crossing the line in 2:13.62, hitting a BIG EAST qualifying mark to conclude the first day of competition.
In day two, Eric Meissner finished seventh in the 600m, with a time of 1:20.78, the fourth fastest time in MU history.
The Golden Eagle men's 4x800 relay team placed second. Kopecki, Peter Bolgert, Johnny Wright and Mike McCarthy all ran excellent legs and crossed the line in 7:44.47.
Kaitlyn Chambers claimed the 800m in the open heat, finishing in 2:15.31, also qualifying to the BIG EAST Championships, while Katlin Millin just missed breaking the school record in the 600m as she crossed the line in 1:35.64 good enough for fourth place.
The Golden Eagles women's 4x800 team also ran excellent legs to earn third place. Cassie Peller, Dani Owen, Alyssa Stevens and Sarah Verdoliva finished in 9:14.80.
Rachel Thiel had a good day in the field events as she posted personal bests and qualified to the BIG EAST Championships in the shot put.
A group of athletes also competed at Northern Iowa in the men's heptathlon.
Mike Laabs had personal bests in all of the heptathlon events and Tom Sage recorded personal bests in five events.
The Golden Eagles will travel to Notre Dame and compete in the Mayo Invitational, Friday, Feb. 8.
