Men's Soccer To Open Spring Season March 14

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's soccer team released its schedule today for the 2008 spring season. Beginning March 14, the Golden Eagles will spend three day playing and training in Florida before returning home for four more dates of competition in April.
"Our schedule, as a whole, is a good spring schedule that gives us some balance," said head coach Louis Bennett. "The schedule provides us an opportunity to try some things with our players and an opportunity to gauge ourselves by playing some top teams."
Marquette will be in Fort Myers, Fla. where the team will play Florida Gulf Coast University at 7 p.m. on March 14. On the following day, the Golden Eagles go head-to-head with Miami FC, a professional club that plays in the USL First Division, and Florida International University.
On March 16, Marquette travels to Bradenton, Fla. to take on the U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team at their training facility at IMG Academies.
"Going south is going to be exciting to get to play two Florida schools, a professional team and the USA residency team," said Bennett. "In each their own way, these games will be a valuable experience."
Saturday, April 5 marks the Blue and Gold intra-squad scrimmage at Valley Fields. Marquette will then host Kentucky on April 12. Lincoln College (Ill.) and Cardinal Stritch, a local opponent, are welcomed to Valley Fields on April 19.
This year's spring season concludes at The Valley with the Wisconsin Division I Spring Cup on April 27. At 9:30 a.m., Marquette will play UW-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay will go against UW-Madison. The two winning teams will then face each other, as will the morning's two losing teams.
"Coming back home, we'll play a tough Kentucky team then some local teams," said Bennett. "Some players won't be able to perform [during the spring season], unfortunately, because of injuries. Hopefully, this gives some of our guys who have not seen a lot of time in the past some playing time."
