Milwaukee - The Marquette University men's tennis squad will host Chicago State and Buffalo this weekend in non-conference matches. The Golden Eagles will take on Chicago State Saturday at 3 p.m., and will then face Buffalo at 10 a.m. on Sunday. All matches will be played at the Helfaer Tennis and Recreation Center in Milwaukee, Wis.
"I think it's going to be a good test for the guys," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "Our depth is good enough to be successful, but the guys will still need to be prepared physically and mentally."
The Golden Eagles (8-4) are coming off a 7-0 sweep of Connecticut Sunday, in which the team did not drop a single set. Singles victories were captured by Stephen Shao, Dusan Medan, Niko Boulieris, Mark Rutherford, Brett Binkley and Graydon Klassen. The Connecticut match provided an opportunity for MU to shuffle its lineup, starting junior Shao in the No. 1 singles position for the first time this season, and allowing freshman Klassen his first collegiate appearance.
The squad boasts a 8-1 home record, with their only Milwaukee loss a 4-3 defeat against No. 37 Arizona State. MU is led by Medan (23-7 overall, 9-3 dual), Rutherford (18-9, 8-3) and Shao (13-7, 9-3) on the singles side. The No. 1 pair of Binkley and Rutherford have posted a 20-7 overall record (6-3 dual) entering this weekend's matches.
Chicago State (1-10 overall) is led by Jakarta, Indonesia natives Prakoso Imanuel, Prabowo Imanuel, and Jonathon Sutjiadi. The team is coached by Deameris Vaughn.
Marquette will be Buffalo's third consecutive road match, as the Bulls (3-7 overall, 0-1 MAC) will take on DePaul Friday and Illinois-Chicago Saturday before coming to Milwaukee. Of the Bulls seven losses, the Buffalo squad has never been swept this season, and has tallied at least two match points in all but one of the outings.
This three-match series will be the last home competition until April for the Golden Eagles, as they take a trip to the West Coast to take on Pacific, San Francisco, and Santa Clara during spring break.
